Stephen M. Guido,
Ph.D. It is my policy to respond to any
person who chooses to make an inquiry about treatment. I will
make every effort to respond to an inquiry within 48 hours or
sooner if the nature of the problem warrants it. It does not
matter if the focus is to enter treatment or
discuss other possible alternatives to
treatment. You can elect to choose my services, but I
will also direct you to another provider if my expertise does not
correspond with your needs, provide information and/or possible
resources to direct your efforts. I am a Certified Critical Incident Stress
Management provider, and I
have treated individuals,
families, employees of corporations and government
agencies when a traumatic incident has occurred. Some of the
interventions occurred with the victims and/or families of
9/11, incidences of workplace violence and/or accidents,
domestic abuse, and other traumatic events. In most traumatic
incidents, the trauma not only affects the victim but those people
close to him/her. Healing requires immediate
intervention for both the victim and those who interact
with him/her on a daily basis. Also, I provide on
site de-briefings to victims, and the necessary
appointments that follow.
Critical Trauma Incidents &
Stress Debriefings: When people undergo trauma or catastrophic incidents of any kind, a
number of symptoms begin to interfere with their physicial,
intellectual and emotional functioning. The spectrum of
trauma includes, but is not limited to, murder, rape and
other forms of molestation, child and spousal abuse, abuse of the
elderly, home and property fires, or accidents,
etc. Depending on the individual's sensitivity
and pre-morbid history, the intensity of response varies from
person to person. Some people may become more traumatized than
others despite the similarity of the traumatic event. Length
and course of treatment depends on previous experiences, individual
personalities, and the patient's resiliency. I utilize my 20 years
of trauma counseling experience to follow the guidelines required
by managed care in determining the course and length of treatment.
Brief psychotherapy, although not recommended for trauma victims,
is available if the individual's treatment is being monitored by a
Managed Care Mental Health provider. | The Trauma of
Domestic Violence: Domestic violence is one of the most traumatic issues one can
face. Often, both physical and emotional abuse erode the
victim's self-esteem. Over time, the victim may feel
hopelessly locked in a destructive and empty relationship.
Additionally, the fear of confronting the abuser may overwhelm the
victim. Domestic violence intervention helps the victim to
eventually confront the problem. In order to do
this, information concerning the legal strategies necessary to
curtail the abuse is offered, as well as referral to those agencies
that provide additional mental health services, financial
assistance and/or a safe environment for victims and their
children. Sometimes this is the only way in which a person can move
forward and change his/her life's circumstances. |
